In the Beginning
22 April 2007
In the beginning was the word
but it did not stop with speaking.
It turned into screaming and cursing
and sometimes the occasional slap.
These were the circumstances
into which you found yourself.
It wasn't really a choice,
like picking your flavor of ice cream,
or a favorite video game.
Looking up into the world of adults
made you wonder, full of wonder.
What was so special about this word:
Weren't they just as scared
as little kids?
Didn't they scream at each other
and make up fairy tales
and like bright, shiny playthings
just like you?
The people who used that word --
adult -- were usually the people
who were that word
and who held that word up
like a magic wand in Harry Potter,
but you always knew better,
knowing that this word
usually came flying forth
with very little thought.
