The moment I walked into the room
I could see that something was amiss.
Perhaps it was the desk.
It was too clean.
All my papers on the floor
and the computer, too.
And Celia standing by the window
not looking out, but staring
at me as if I was a giant bug
and she was DDT.
I tried to smile
but she would have none of it.
Perhaps it was something I'd said
on some previous occasion(s).
Perhaps it was something I'd done
or something she thought I'd done
or something someone said I'd done.
She hardly wanted to talk.
Instead, she picked up a book
and hurled it at my head.
I hardly had time to duck
and it hit me square.
A bit dizzy, certainly surprised,
I looked down at the book,
Changing Minds by Howard Gardner.
I smiled, having read the book,
and not having had much luck.
