The laugh track from the TV is no consolation
as you wait alone on a moonless night
hoping she'll come home again,
always hoping that she'll come home
from the late shift.
Your mother left cookies on the top shelf,
but you're too small to reach them.
And you keep turning to the door,
listening for footsteps in the hallway,
and sometimes you hear footsteps in the hallway,
but then they go away,
and sometimes you look at the window pane,
and you imagine vampires looking in,
and so you make yourself watch the TV,
but the TV people are not very funny.
In fact, they're not funny at all,
even if the ghosts in the TV,
especially because the ghosts in the TV
keep laughing and laughing.
