Survival Imperative

    10 July 2005

    The walls come tumbling down,
    dust, alive, all around,
    gravity won't let go,
    heavy in tragedy,
    alone in tragedy,
    dogged by darkness
    embracing darkness,
    unwilling to surrender,
    like Ali,
    "float like a butterfly,
    sting like a bee"
    rushing forward into a sea
    of scarred humanity,
    you're unwilling to flee,
and you just can't get free,
    unseen waters, foul waters,
    rushing through your body,
    at times
    seeking a little
    sympathy,
    but ultimately
    knowing
    facing up
    to being
    alone in tragedy,
    heavy in tragedy,
    and only
    find companionship
    if strong enough
    to survive.

    So you pick yourself up
    swim against the raging
    and find your way back.
