If Life Takes Wing
16 July 2005
If tears dry in the winter cold
or the terror of loneliness returns
when shadows creep from unseen lights
in the depth of the winter night
will I remember the summer
of your sensuous embrace or your face
so close to mine that your breath warmed my cheek
and springtime danced along my naked arms
each time you touched me;
that vision of your eyes, so full of life;
the way you teased me, without even trying;
the laughter of our children playing
and the suddenness of growing up?
We do not realize the turning point
until, looking backwards, we realize
it came and went, just like summer.
If life takes wing and leaves me for better climes
will I be ready for the abandonment?
