A Time Line of some of the important developments in Bhutan's Foreign Relations after the period of self-imposed isolation (1958-1990).

 

1958: Prime Minister Nehru of India, visited Bhutan. He was the first head of Government of a foreign          nation to visit Bhutan.

1961: Bhutan launches the first Five Year Plan.

1962: Bhutan joins the Colombo Plan, the first international organisation that the nation joined.

1968: Office of the Special Officer of the Government of India was opened in Thimphu.

1969: Bhutan joins the Universal Postal Union.

1971: Bhutan becomes a member of the United Nations.

1971: PERMANENT MISSION TO THE UNITED NATIONS established in New York.

1971: Representativesappointed on a reciprocal basis, between India and Bhutan in pursuance of the decision to establish formal diplomatic relations.

1973: Bhutan joins the Non-Alligned Movement.

1973: Non-resident diplomatic relations established with Bangladesh.

1978: Diplomatic representatives of Bhutan and India, re-designated as Ambassadors and upgraded to the status of Embassies.

1980: Bhutan establishes an Embassy in Bangladesh, resident diplomatic relations was established.

1982: Bhutan joins the Group of 77.

1982: Bhutan joins SACEP(South Asian Cooperative Environment Programme)

1983: Creation of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Coperation).

1983: Bhutan establishes "non resident" diplomatic relations with Nepal.

1983 Bhutanese Consul General appointed in Kuwait.

1984: The King visits Dhaka and Bhutan and Bangladesh sign a protocol on the expansion of and          regulation of trade, and an agreement on economic and cultural cooperation.

1984: Bhutan establishes "non resident" diplomatic relations with Maldives.

1985: PERMANENT MISSION TO THE UNITED NATIONS established in Geneva.

1985: Non Resident Diplomatic relations established with Switzerland.

1985: Non Resident Diplomatic relations established with Denmark.

1985: Non Resident Diplomatic relations established with EEC.

1985: Non Resident Diplomatic relations established with Norway.

1985: Non Resident Diplomatic relations established with Netherlands.

1985: Non Resident Diplomatic relations established with Sweden.

1985: Consul General in Kuwait upgraded to Embassy and resident Ambassador appointed.

1986: Non Resident Diplomatic relations established with Japan.

1986: Non Resident Diplomatic relations established with Finland.

1987: Bhutan establishes "non resident" diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka.

1987: Bhutan establishes "non resident" diplomatic relations with South Korea.

1988: Bhutan establishes "non resident" diplomatic relations with Pakistan.

1989: Non-resident diplomatic relations established with Thailand.

1989: Non-resident diplomatic relations established with Austria.

1992: Non-resident diplomatic relations established with Bahrain.

1997: Thailand non-resident relations, upgraded to Embassy and Charge d'Affaires appointed.
