On April 17, 1975 the Khmer Rouge entered Phnom Penh city. The troops in black uniforms and Hogi Myung sandals come marching into the city, taking over all former government officers, offices and property. The Khmer Rouge revolution turned Cambodia into grisly killing fields, as the Pol Pot regime murdered or starved to death a million and a half of Cambodia's eight million inhabitants. Those targeted for execution included officials and soldiers of the Lon Nol government, members of the urban elite, ethnic minorities, and persons from within the party's own ranks. All told, the brutal restructuring of Khmer society resulted in the deaths of approximately two million people, or one in three Cambodians.
