An Assasination Blunder by the Russians
If all had gone according to the Russians plan, the plot to assassinate Amin would not have been reversed. However, instead of Amin, it was Taraki who fell inot their trap and ended up being killed a few nights later. It was evident that the Russians felt great disappointment because of the failure of their plan. The death of Taraki would have to be revenged in order to redeem themsleves in the face of such indignity and humiliation. Amin soon realized that his term as persident, and his life, were in the hands of the Russians and he tried to quell Russia's anger by "pretending to be its loyal and real servant." From his term that lasted from September 17, 1979, to December 26, 1979, he tried to carry the phrase "love of Russia" to the level of "love of motherland", but Brezhnev was not affected by Amin's calculated and insincere gestures. Brezhnev ordered Amin's assassination, and on Decmber 26, 1979, Amin was killed in an armed atack directed by General Papitan.
