Spreading the Word:

Ad Campaigns as a Means of AIDS Prevention

In an effort to create active awareness about AIDS, many African countries have begun massive ad campaigns, especially in urban areas, to disseminate accurate information about the disease and encourage people to practice preventive measures. I have found numerous examples from countries all over Africa of posters, pamphlets, and other merchandise with AIDS messages from the Johns Hopkins Center for Communications Programs Info-to-Go database on the web (http://www.jhuccp.org/info_to_go/aids/). This webpage synthesizes the images of posters and other materials from the web with information about African culture and society and the AIDS crisis in an effort to make observations and draw conclusions about the effectiveness of AIDS advertising in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Visual images, such as posters and billboards provide an avenue for disseminating information about HIV and AIDS to a wide audience. Ads have been created on a variety of AIDS related topics from factual information about the spread of the disease to information aimed at breaking down stereotypes associated with the disease. The ads in these pages have been organized loosely by topic, but there is much cross-over as many ads address more than one topic.
