Janjaweed- An Arab militia blamed with the attacks on black African villages. It is widely speculated that the Janjaweed is allied with the Sudanese government, although the authorities deny any connection. Arab Gathering- Refers to an alliance of nomadic Arab tribes forged in the 1980s. African Belt- An alliance among the agricultural Fur tribe forged in response to the threat of the Arab Gathering. The Fur, Barni, Tama, Jebel, Aranga, Masaalit Tribes- These are the agricultural tribes of the Darfur region. The Rezeghat and Zaghawa Tribes- Sedentary cattle-herding tribes in Darfur. The Taaysha, Habaneya, Beni Helba and Mahameed Tribes- Nomadic cattle-herding tribes in Darfur. Sudanese Liberation Army (SLA) and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM)- Rebel groups responding to inequalities in the Darfur region between African tribes and the ruling Arab elite. Omar al-Bashir- President of Sudan. Came to power through a military coup in 1989, and was became president officially in 1993. Party affiliation: National Congress Party.
