
ACCESSION NEGOTIATIONS
The accession negotiations take the form of bilateral intergovernmental
conferences between the representatives of the European Union and the
applicant country.
The purpose of the accession negotiations is to set the conditions
under which each of the candidate-members will join the European Union.
Accession negotiations with Cyprys, the Czeck Republik, Estonia, Hungary,
Poland and Slovenia were opened on March 31, 1998. These six countries
are referred to as the First Wave of candidate members.
Accession negotiations with Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Romania
and the Slovak Republik were opened on March 31, 1998. These six countries
are referred to as the Second wave of candidate members.
