Acquis Communautaire is the entire body of the European Community legislation and all the regulations and directives passed by the Council of Ministers. It is divided into 31 Chapters, each one focusing on a specific topic.

The screening process begins prior to opening of accession negotiations and continues parallel to them afterwards.

The initial pre-negotiations screening the European Commission aims to increase the understanding of the candidate-state of the EU legislation. It also proposes ways for its implementation into the candidate's legislation and focuses on problematic areas.

After negotiations are opened the process of screening continues integrating further parts of the Acquis and reassessing on a regular basis the degree to which the applicant country is successful in implementing the Acquis.

One of the major goal of the screening process is to ensure that not only is the new the legislation of the candidate country implemented but also that it is successfully enforced.
