Sahrawi Exodus to the Rest of Morocco

Several reasons have led the Sahrawis to leave the harsh arid desert for the more friendly climate of the rest of Morocco. One of the reasons is natural. Sandstorms, otherwise known as siroccos, make life tough for the Sahrawis. The dryness of the land makes it extremely unsuitable for grazing. This leads to scarcity and starvation. Consequentlymany prefer to give up the tough life in the desert for the easier one in the north, where grazing land is available and life is much easier.

Another reason is political. Many Sahrawis did not want to live under Spanish colonial rule. Hence, 1956,  the year in which the northern part of Morocco gained independence, proved to be one in which many Saharawis moved to the free territories of the north to share andenjoy their freedom.
