::An introduction to Sudan::

Before we begin our journey, there are some useful information about Sudan that will give us more clear picture. This page will provide general facts about Sudan, which includes geographical location and economic structure. Although Sudan is in the African continent, its population are not entirely black. There is different demographic groups. There are black and Islamic groups. The location and the history can clearly tell the reason.

Geoghaphical Fact:

Sudan is located in the northeast of Africa. It is the largest country in Africa with the total area of 2,505,810 square kilometres (or approxiamtely one-quarter of the United States size). On its east side, it connects with Ethiopia, Eritrea and Red Sea. On the west, it connects with Chad and Central African Republic. Egypt and Libya are located in the north whereas Congo, Uganda and Kenya are connected in the south. From the south to north, Nile river extends for more than a thousand miles across the country. It has a tropical weather in the south, but arid desert in the north. The rainy season can last long up to six months (Between April to October).

Climate:

The climate is varied in different regions divided into three parts:

- In the northern dessert area, the weather is very hot and dry. The maximum temperature can be as high as a hundred and ten degrees F whereas the temperature in winter can be as low as forty degrees F.

- In the central part including a region around Khartoum (the capital city), the weather is slightly lower with rain falls annually while there is no rain fall in the northern region (mostly between June and September)

- In the south, it has a tropical climate with high rainfall and high humidity. The avarage temperature annual is eighty-five degrees F.

 

Demographic Information:

The total population is approximately thirty millions. The young group (age below fourteen years old) is fourty-six percent. It is almost as large as the adult group (age between fifteen to sixty-four years old), which is fifty-two percent. It can be noticed that the rate of fertility is quite high. Life expectancy is about fifty-four years old of total population. In Southern Sudan, there is no predominence of any ethnic group. Dihka, which is the largest are forty percent of the population in the south, whereas the Nuer is five percent and the Shilluk is only one percent.
