Eleanor Townsley, Associate Dean of Faculty and Professor of Sociology, works with Sonya Stephens and the faculty on a large portfolio of projects including curriculum-to-career initiatives. Her research focuses on the institutional contexts and political consequences of intellectual practices. Her most recent book, co-authored with Ron Jacobs, is The Space of Opinion: Intellectuals, Media, and the Public Sphere (Oxford, 2011). She teaches courses in social theory, the sociology of gender, survey research and data analysis, and archival and field methods.
She is especially proud of her multi-generational work with the MHC Class of 1955 (of which she is an honorary member) and she was the recipient of the Mount Holyoke College Teaching Award in 2005. Her B.A. is from the University of Queensland in her native Australia; her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees are from the University of California at Los Angeles. She has taught at Mount Holyoke since 1996.
