CST prepared me to think creatively about problems and solutions, to ask necessary questions that other people aren't asking, and to write and speak well. This played a role in the culturally-empowering approach I took when I was teaching, and plays a role now that I am working in research. Someone needs to ask critical questions about race and gender with regards to methodology, and about the social impact of our research. CST gave me the tools and courage to do this (and as I got older I learned to do it more diplomatically).
