In 2002, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded $83,000 to Sue Ellen Gruber and her colleagues, under the Major Research Instrumentation Program, to acquire high-resolution light microscopy and image processing instruments over a period of three years. Gruber has won several other awards since joining MHC, including an NSF grant to develop a cell biology curriculum and a National Institutes of Health grant to study the cloning of plant Lamin DNA.

The author of numerous articles, Gruber is affiliated with several professional organizations, including Sigma Xi. She is also a reviewer for NSF research grants in cell biology.

Gruber teaches intermediate-level courses in cell biology and senior seminars on electron microscopy.
