The department’s course offerings range from introductory survey courses (such as 201, Introduction to Film and 202, Talking Pictures) to intermediate- and advanced-level courses in production and editing; film history; film genres, including documentary and experimental films; film theory; film authorship; and special topics such as music and film, national and transnational cinemas, and American media history. All production courses require a course application.
Introductory courses in Film Studies begin at the 200-level, although occasional film studies-related courses are offered as First-Year Seminars. Students in their first year can take the following courses, one of which is required for the Film Studies major and minor:
