Divya Chandramouli, "Transformed Stages: Carnatic Music as a Platform for Indian Nationalism"
Divya Chandramouli will travel to archives in India to conduct research on how this "traditional" art form was created. She will explore how Carnatic music shifted from being an art performed by Devadasis in temples and royal courts to one performed by and for an educated, upper-class Brahmin elite, in music organizations, concert halls, and academies. In other words, Divya's research explores how the traditional social spaces and practices of Carnatic music became marginalized, dramatically transforming this classical tradition.
