Lecturer in Physical Education and Athletics
Michelle Scecina has been the head coach of the Mount Holyoke basketball team since 2004.
In 2007, Scecina was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Coach of the Year for her efforts in leading the Lyons to their first ever NEWMAC Championship. With their win in the league title game, they secured a spot in the NCAA Division III National Tournament for the first time in program history.
Under Scecina’s direction in 2006, the basketball team captured the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship with a 72-68 win over perennial powerhouse Emmanuel College. She also helped guide the team to five consecutive Seven Sisters Championships, two as the assistant coach and three as the head coach.
Scecina is beginning her first term as Co-President of the New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) and is serving in her third year as a member of the NCAA Regional Rankings Committee.
Prior to being at MHC, Scecina was the assistant coach at Springfield College, where she helped lead the Pride to the NCAA Division III Tournament Regional Semifinals in 2002 and the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2001.
In addition to her coaching duties at MHC, Scecina teaches many of the badminton and racquetball classes in the Department of Physical Education. Scecina is an American Red Cross certified instructor in water safety, life guarding, CPR and community first aid. She typically teaches the Advanced Beginning section of the swimming curriculum.
