Pamela Matheson

Associate Director of Pre-Health Advising

Dr. Pamela Matheson, the Associate Director of Pre-Health Advising at Mount Holyoke College, works with undergraduate students preparing for entrance into graduate schools in the health professions. Dr. Matheson is the primary person to contact for general pre-health advising questions. Pam received her bachelor's degree in psychology from Hope College in Holland, Michigan and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Applied Research and Evaluation from Hofstra University. She has worked with numerous and varied health professionals during her time as a researcher for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the New York City Health Department, the Association for Children with Down Syndrome and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). During her time at UMDNJ, Pam travelled to Malawi as a member of a World Health Organization/University of Pennsylvania research team evaluating the incidence of HIV-1 in a rural sub-Saharan African country. The team's study tested a non-obtrusive technique to detect infection and estimate mother-to-child transmission of the virus. Pam also teaches STAT 140 (Introduction to the Ideas and Applications of Statistics) and STAT 240 (Elementary Data Analysis and Experimental Design) for the Mathematics and Statistics department at MHC. Prior to arriving at Mount Holyoke College, Pam served as the Director of Pre-Health Programs and taught statistics at Smith College.

A relatively recent transplant from the New York City area, Pam enjoys spending time with her family which includes her spouse Marian, their daughter Caroline and two dogs (Shoeshine and Elvis). Together they enjoy gardening, culinary arts, biking, swimming, basketball, snow shoeing, and skiing. Pam is an avid potter and golfer as well.
