CIEE in Santiago, Dominican Republic
Class of 2014
I chose this country primarily because it was a Spanish speaking country in the Caribbean, which is somewhere I had always dreamt of visiting.
By studying in the Dominican Republic I was hoping to improve my Spanish speaking skills. My first language is Spanish but speaking English in an academic setting for the last 3 years has made it difficult for me to communicate with my mother at times. I was able to take advanced level Spanish classes abroad that in turn allowed me to become completely fluent in my first language.
It was a very rewarding experience in that I was able to fully immerse myself in a new culture both inside and out of the classroom. It was a learning process in which I was able to learn more about Dominican culture, values, and important traditions.
