American University’s Washington Semester Program offers more than a dozen distinct programs that cover such topics as American politics, justice, journalism, public law, and peace and conflict studies. Students participate in an intensive internship and seminar related to the program focus, and conduct an independent research project or take an elective course at American University to round out the semester.
Students apply directly to AU for admission to the program (check the AU web site for deadlines), and must also submit Mount Holyoke’s application for academic leave of absence to the Office of Academic Deans by March 1 (for fall) or November 15 (for spring). AU applications are processed on a rolling admission basis.
Students admitted to the program pay tuition and fees directly to American University. Students are encouraged to apply to the Washington Semester Program for need-based scholarships. The scholarship application is available online through the application portal, and can be accessed after a student has been admitted by AU.
