Accessible Furniture

Students who require accessible furniture should make this request to AccessAbility Services three weeks before the start of classes.

Accessible Parking

A state-issued, handicap parking permit is required for parking in any of the designated handicap parking spaces on campus. Students who display the appropriate state handicap parking permit may park in any parking space in any campus lot, except those specifically reserved for state vehicles and other specifically assigned spaces.  

Architectural Modification

Please contact AccessAbility Services immediately to report an architectural barrier. While some problems can be easily remedied, others may require extensive repair or modifications. In such situations with ample advance notice, alternate solutions may be considered, such as moving a course or activity to another location. Please note that we may not be able to accommodate last minute requests.


Students requesting a copy of their disability documentation or a letter verifying accommodations for another college or standardized exams must submit requests in writing at least two weeks in advance. 

Exam Proctoring

AccessAbility Services provides exam proctoring during our regular office hours, Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. During midterms and finals, our exam proctoring hours extend to 5:00 p.m. Students are expected to take their exams the same day and time that the course meets. In the case of scheduling conflicts, students must request permission from their professors to test at a different time. We ask that students needing to test in AccessAbility Services schedule regular quizzes and tests one week in advance and midterm and finals two weeks in advance of an exam. Keep in mind that last minute scheduling may not always be accommodated. 

Printed Material in Alternate Format

Students who qualify for alternate format should submit their requests to AccessAbility Services three weeks in advance. Students are asked to fill out a form indicating their desired file format and any other necessary settings. If the process requires removing a book's binding, AccessAbility Services will re-bind the book. AccessAbility Services will make every effort to provide the electronic version of a book as quickly as possible. Completion time for conversion depends on the size and format of the text and, importantly, how many other students are waiting to have their books scanned. The beginning of the semester is the busiest time; so it is best to make requests early. Please note that highlighting, pen marks and bent pages do not scan accurately. Text-to-speech readers cannot read math and science books containing graphic equations, formulas or symbols. For blind students, these books are best accessed by using a live reader or braille. 

Students may choose to scan their own books using a manual scanner. Student workers are available to train students in this process. Scanning stations are located in AccessAbility Services. Please note, only the AccessAbility Services staff may use the high speed book scanners.

Housing Accommodations

Students who require disability housing accommodations or modifications need to complete and submit a Housing Accommodation Form by June 12 for fall semester and October 25 for spring semester. Housing accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis, and all accommodations require disability documentation. There is no guarantee housing accommodations can be met, especially when requests are submitted after the deadline or disability documentation is missing or incomplete. 

Interpreter, FM or CART service

Students requiring services for a hearing impairment should contact AccessAbility Services 4 to 6 weeks prior to the start of classes. AccessAbility Services needs to coordinate services with an outside agency in order to implement these services. If you receive interpreters or CART you must notify us immediately about schedule changes or planned absences.  

Learning Specialist

Available by appointment. Students may schedule up to one 45-minute appointment per week. Appointments require four hours' notice if a cancellation is necessary. If a student has a morning appointment, the student must call by 3:00 p.m. the previous day to cancel. If a student misses two appointments without following cancellation guidelines, the student will not be permitted to work with the Learning Specialist for the rest of the semester. Being punctual is also important, as appointments are often scheduled back to back. Keep in mind if you are more than 15 minutes late, you may forfeit your appointment. Time slots are limited, so call early in the semester to schedule times.


Students should request note-taking services four weeks before the start of classes. This will give AccessAbility Services ample time to email the job posting to students in the classes. Once note-takers have been hired, we will send students receiving this service an email with the note-takers' names and contact information. If a note-taker is not identified before the course begins, a recording device may be brought to class. Students who wish to remain anonymous may ask the note-taker to drop off the notes at AccessAbility Services. Note-takers are not provided to assist with typing papers or any assignments other than taking notes during class. Any problems or complaints about the note-taking service should be reported immediately to AccessAbility Services. Please see page 25 for more information on the note-taker accommodation.

Personal Care

The college is not responsible for providing any type of personal care. Students needing Personal Care Attendants are encouraged to contact their state agency that provides rehabilitation services.


Students who have difficulty with reading or writing are encouraged to use assistive technology available on campus, including voice recognition programs, text and screen readers. Requests for a scribe/reader should be made two weeks in advance. These services are available for both in class assignments as well exams in any situation where assistive technology is not applicable.

Service Animals

Students who are eligible to use service animals are permitted to bring their animal everywhere on campus. However, some places, such as specific research labs, mechanical rooms and areas that require special protective clothing, may not be safe for animals. The following guidelines are required by the owner in order for the animal to be allowed on campus:

  • Animals must be licensed in accordance with local regulations
  • Animals must have all appropriate vaccinations
  • Animals must be in good health
  • Animals to be housed at the college must have an annual clean bill of health from a licensed veterinarian. 
  • Animals must be on a leash at all times
  • Animals must be under control at all times
  • Owner is responsible for waste disposal
