Honoring Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth, a former slave who lived in Northampton in the mid-1800's, was a nationally-known advocate for equality and justice. A group of Northampton citizens from many walk of life have come together with the idea of creating a memorial statue to honor her and her work.

As part of a study on"public" art, the class is studying the creation in nearby Florence of a statue in honor of Sojourner Truth. The class will contribute to the work of the committee, by distributing "penny jars" to raise money for the statue and also work on the committee web site.
