Mineralogy is the study of minerals, naturally-occurring chemical compounds. This includes their composition and morphology, chemical and physical structure, and the processes by which they are formed. Spectroscopy is a valuable tool in mineralogy.

Minerals not only provide the raw materials for much of our engineering and technology (concrete, steel, ceramics, and silicon), they form the structure of our bodies in our bones and teeth, form the basis of our economy (gold), and can even provide beauty in our daily lives (diamonds and other gems).
