In problem 3.12, n is the relative index of refraction, or, if the prism is in air and we say that n_{air}=1, then n is the index of refraction of the prism. If the geometry of 3.12 is too hard, don't agonize over it! The phenomenon of minimum deviation is interesting and explains some beautiful phenomena in the atmosphere -- the reason I assigned it is mainly so that you would know about it.
