Physics 100 Problems

Assignment 1 (the RULE OF THREE): Due Tuesday, Sept. 10, beginning of class (absolute deadline: 5PM, Clapp 423):

• Problems 2.3, 2.4, 2.5
• Do these problems in two ways: both graphically and arithmetically. This is a good time to notice that if you can do a problem two different ways, especially two conceptually different ways, you should do both. It's a way of checking, you deepen your understanding, and you develop good habits of accuracy.

Assignment 2: Due Tuesday, Sept 17, beginning of class (absolute deadline: 5PM, Clapp 423):

• Problems 2.19, 2.20, 2.26, 2.28, 2.31
• Problems 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.5

Assignment 3: Due Tuesday, Sept 24, beginning of class (absolute deadline: 5PM, Clapp 423):

• Problems 3.11, 3.12, 3.15, 3.17, 3.18, 3.20, 3.21

In problem 3.12, n is the relative index of refraction, or, if the prism is in air and we say that nair=1, then n is the index of refraction of the prism. If the geometry of 3.12 is too hard, don't agonize over it! The phenomenon of minimum deviation is interesting and explains some beautiful phenomena in the atmosphere -- the reason I assigned it is mainly so that you would know about it.

Assignment 4: Due Tuesday, Oct 1, beginning of class (absolute deadline: 5PM, Clapp 423):

• Problems 3.24, 3.29, 3.30, 3.32 (see discussion after Eq. 3.37)
• Problems 4.1, 4.4, 4.12, 4.20, 4.24, 4.26

Assignment 11: Due Tuesday, Nov. 26, beginning of class (absolute deadline: 5 PM, Clapp 423):
