MHC MATH CLUBFALL 2003

Abstract for Marcia Groszek's Talk at Smith, December 4, 2003
(The Alice Ambrose and Thomas Tymoczo lecture)

The tenth of Hilbert's famous problems, posed in 1900, was finally proven to be unsolvable in 1970. Yuri Matijasevich's proof builds on over 20 years of work, both independent and collaborative, by Julia Robinson and Martin Davis. The history of this proof is a story of persistence and generosity. I will talk about this history as well as about some of the mathematical ideas involved.
