SUMMERMATH TEACHING AND COUNSELING POSITIONS

Description of Organization

 

SummerMath presents an innovative approach to mathematics for high school age women. Approximately 50 students from across the country spend four weeks on the Mount Holyoke campus exploring mathematics in a very diverse community.   Students work in pairs on mathematics problems and computer programming.  They also take workshops on such topics as brain imaging, architecture, and robotics.  After class, students participate in sports and take trips on the weekends to New England attractions.  Program evaluations show positive changes in confidence level and problem-solving skills.

 

Position Description

 

SummerMath is seeking several undergraduate students to serve as Residential and Teaching Assistants (RA/TA's) or as Assistant Head Resident for the upcoming summer program.  Each TA assists in two classes per day (either mathematics or computer programming) and lives in the dormitory with students as a residential counselor.  RA/TA's work closely with both the academic teaching staff and head resident.  All staff attend one week of staff orientation prior to the beginning of the program. (6/19 – 6/23)

 

Desirable Qualifications for Candidates

 

Candidates with residential counseling experience in multicultural environments are particularly sought. Demonstrated leadership and listening skills, ability to work on a team, stamina, sense of humor, and interest in working in a creative atmosphere is desired. Pay includes five weeks room and board and a stipend.
