Announcements:

  • November 25, 2002: On Problem Set 10, you might want the following definition: A group G has a non-trivial center if the center of G contains any element of G other than the identity.

  • October 29, 2002: Problem Set 7 will be due on Tuesday, November 5 instead of Friday, November 1.

  • September 25, 2002: Let's omit Problem 5 from Problem Set 3, since we haven't yet covered Theorem 4.4. I'll include that same problem in a future problem set, probably the very next one.

  • September 18, 2002: My office hours today will be 4:30 - 5:30 instead of 3:00 - 4:00.

  • September 10, 2002: We will meet in 402 Clapp on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the rest of the semester. On Fridays, we'll continue to squeeze into 422 Clapp until we can find an alternative.

  • September 3, 2002: The textbook for the course is Contemporary Abstract Algebra by Joseph Gallian, fifth edition, Houghton Mifflin, 2002 (ISBN 0-618-12214-1, if you're interested).

There were 19 copies on the shelf at Odyssey this morning. You can also order it on-line from Amazon/Borders, Barnes and Noble, or Varsity Books (and probably elsewhere). The on-line prices I found were about the same as the Odyssey price, and didn't include shipping.
