  • April 18, 2002: The solutions to problem sets 3, 4, and 5 are now available from the Homework page.
  • March 24, 2002: There's at least one typo in Problem Set #5. Problem 5b should ask you to explain why the numbers you found in 5a are the only solutions to x2 is congruent to negative 1 modulo 1013. Sorry about that.
  • February 20, 2002: We will not meet on Friday, February 22, 2002. Also, I won't be holding office hours on Thursday, February 21.
  • February 14, 2002: If at all possible, you should attend the Connecticut Valley Colloquium talk and dinner on Wednesday, February 20. There's pizza at 6:00 in 416 Clapp, and a lecture at 7:00 in 101 Dwight. The lecture is on number theory, and treats topics we'll be studying later in the semester. See Margaret for details and to reserve your slice of pizza.
  • February 14, 2002: The due dates for Problem Sets #2 and #3 have been moved back to Tuesday, February 19 and Tuesday, February 26 respectively.
  • January 24, 2002: The textbook is on the shelves at Odyssey, priced at $94.50. Yes, it's expensive, but it is a very good book.
  • January 8, 2002: The textbook for the course is An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers by Niven, Zuckerman, and Montgomery, fifth edition,
John Wiley & Sons, 1991 (ISBN 0-471-62546-9, if you're interested).

It should be on the shelves at Odyssey before the beginning of the semester. You can also order copies on-line at Amazon/Borders or Barnes and Noble for about $91 plus shipping. The on-line supplier varsitybooks.com lists the book as "on order," and has a slightly higher price.
