Announcements:

  • May 6, 2003: Reading Days Office Hours will be my usual office hours: 1:30 - 3:00 on Wednesday and 10:30 - 12:00 on Thursday. Send e-mail to make appointments for other times.

  • February 18, 2003: Problem Set #2 will be due at the beginning of class on Thursday, February 20.

  • February 13, 2003: There's an error in Problem Set #2. In problem B2, the ciphertext is wrong. Here's the correct ciphertext:
JMCRZ CJXSV WJSRC XDRCL VXWPI PCURW P

  • February 4, 2003: There's a typographical error in Problem Set #1. In problem B2(b), the code you enter in cell B2 should be code(A2)-code("A"), and not code(A1)-code("A"). You can download a corrected Problem Set from the Homework page.

  • February 4, 2003: To complete Problem Set #1, you'll need a standard frequency table. You can download this handout from the Resource page.

  • January 31, 2003: The fourth-hour survey results show that there's no available time during the week with fewer conflicts than our current fourth hour. So we'll continue to meet on Friday at 1:15 in 216 Skinner.

  • January 23, 2003: There are two textbooks for the course. They are Invitation to Cryptology by Thomas H. Barr, Prentice-Hall, 2002, and The Code Book by Simon Singh, Anchor Books, 2000.
If you try to buy the books on-line, be aware that Amazon.com has the Barr book listed with an incorrect title, so you have to search for "Introduction to Cryptography", or else just use the ISBN, which is 0130889768.
