MATH 333
  SPRING 2003

Announcements:

  • May 6, 2003: Reading Days Office Hours will be my usual office hours: 1:30 - 3:00 on Wednesday and 10:30 - 12:00 on Thursday. Send e-mail to make appointments for other times.

  • May 6, 2003: You can find the approximate letter-grade equivalents for your exam grades from a link on the Resources page, near the hour exam solutions.

  • May 6, 2003: Part B of Problem Set #8 is back from the grader. You can pick up your graded homework from the board outside my office.

  • May 1, 2003: There is a list of practice problems for the final exam at demos/finalprac.html. You can use one page of your own notes, a Laplace transform table (which I will supply), and a graphing calculator on the final.

  • April 22, 2003: The new due date for Problem Set #8 is Tuesday, April 29. There will be one further (optional) problem set after that, due on May 6, the last day of class.

  • April 22, 2003: There are two new handouts available from the Resources page: the handout on beats, and an example showing how to use the Heaviside function in Maple.

  • March 10, 2003: There's an error on Problem Set #5. In problem C1, you should ignore the given initial conditions. Find the general solution to the differential equation, and leave the constants c1 and c2 undetermined.

  • February 26, 2003: Hour Exam I will be distributed after class on Thursday, and will be due by 5:00 pm on Friday. The exam will comprise questions similar to the following homework questions in the book: Section 1.4, 15-20; Section 2.1, 1(c)-12(c); Section 2.2, 9(a)-20(a); Section 2.3, 1-10 and 18; Section 2.5, 8-13; Section 2.7, 11-15. You'll need a calculator for the exam.

  • February 26, 2003: If you're not familiar with proof by induction you might want to read the Proof by Induction Example handout available from the Resources page

  • February 26, 2003: We will not meet on Tuesday, March 4.

  • February 19, 2003: There's an error on problem A2(d) of Problem Set 3. The limit should be taken as t goes to infinity, not y. Sorry about that.

  • January 31, 2003: We'll eliminate the Friday fourth hour and instead convene 30 minutes early on Tuesday and Thursday. So starting on February 4, we'll meet from 12:45 to 2:30 in 304 Reese.

  • January 23, 2003: The textbook for the course is
Elementary Differential Equations by William Boyce and Richard DiPrima, seventh edition, Wiley, 2001, ISBN 0-471-31998-8.

It's ridiculously expensive -- sorry about that. The best on-line price I found for a new copy was $117.99 at VarsityBooks. There are some used copies out there, too.
