Venue:
The class meets in 401 Clapp
on Monday and Wednesday from
1:15 to 3:00.
Text:
The primary text is
Laboratories in Mathematical Experimentation,
by the Mt.~Holyoke
College Mathematics Department, Springer, 1997. Also recommended is
LaTeX: A Document Preparation System, by Leslie Lamport,
Addison Wesley, 1994.
Course description:
In this course, you will write six short mathematics papers, most of
them on topics suggested in the textbook.
The research you do in preparing to write each paper may include
running computer programs to collect numerical data, looking up
definitions and previous results in published mathematics books and
articles, and looking for patterns and proofs on your own.
Requirements:
You will have a paper due every other Friday of the semester, starting
with Friday, February 13.
You will have an opportunity to rewrite each paper once to improve
your grade.
There will be no quizzes or exams in this course. I may occasionally
ask for short written assignments between papers.
Grading:
Your grade for the course will be the average of the grades you get on
the six papers. If you rewrite a paper, the grade I record for that
paper will be the average of the original and rewrite grades.
Resources:
My office hours are listed above; you can make appointments to talk
with me at other times.
Issues of Academic Integrity:
You are encouraged to work in small groups during the research and
data collection phases of each project. You must, however, write your
actual papers independently.
