Rouget de Lisle sings la Marsseillaise.jpg - Rouget de Lisle sings the "War Song of the Army of the Rhine" in Strassbourg, where he was stationed as a captain. He wrote and first sang the song in April 1792, presumably after the French declared war on Austria and Prussia. He became known as "La Marseillaise" because the volunteers from Marseillais sang the song at every stop on their way to Paris in July 1792.
