Whether a cold-blooded killer or a child beggar, the penal system of the French Revolution showed mercy to no man. Enlightened reformers of the Revoltion attempted to change the system and give more rights to the criminal.

 

But to no avail, the system still remained corrupt, with detrimental as opposed to rehabilitating prison conditions.
