 Welcome

to the world of the Working Classes

This picture depicts a scene from the life of the urban poor. Better caption to come.

Victor Hugo's Les Miserables brings us into the world of the working class, but it leaves unaswered as many questions as it answers. What is the image of particular sectors of the working classes that Hugo is trying to convey? In what ways is his image true to reality, and it what ways is it a distortion? In our site we attempt to more fully understand both Hugo's representation of the working class, and the reality of French working class life at the time of Les Miserables.
