Government needs real goods, like buildings and cars and aircraft, and government employs people who need to eat food, have houses to live in, cars to drive, clothing to wear, and so on. If society doesn't produce a surplus of all these things, then there can be no government.
: In class on thursday, we talked about how surpluses were needed for things like churches and government to function because these people do not really produce anything. If there was no surplus do neo-classists or marxists believe that government would collapse or would people always be willing to give money to these institutions?
