Internships are not exactly community service because the person doing the work is learning a skill, not just donating their time. This is in essence just like taking a class, but for payment the student barters their time for the knowledge. Just as colleges (in producing knowledge) fit into the capitalist system, so do internships. It could not really be considered slavery since the intern has decided to do the work. However, if the intern wanted to quit and was bound by a contract, it could become a feudal relationship.
