By doing an internship, you're learning, but you're also making connections and gaining skills for a future job there or somewhere else. With community service, sadly I think many people do it because of some kind of requirement (i.e. probation, National Honor Society--not that these activities are related :o).
: internships and community service are certainly contradictions to the neo-classical idea of humans being inherently greedy. some people actually do work not just because they want to make money to buy more, but because they get pleasure from making others happy and from learning. This does, at the same time however, fit into the neoclassical idea that we are pleasure-seeking creatures, just not always in a material sense.
