self-employment- liberating or draining?

Posted by Crystal Bourbeau on November 4, 2001 at 15:53:14:

What has self-employment done for the American society? On the one hand it acts as a liberating process, but it also helped to fabricate the "Amercian dream"- this illusion that we all can achieve whatever we want through hardwork and determination. Self-employment helps to promote self-motivation, hardwork, and working with a personal passion. But, it also has the potential to make people crazed with work. People devote so much of their selves into their businesses that often they do not have the ability to sit back and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
Also I think it is important to look at the amount of hours people work. When comparing European economical systems to the American economical system, Americans work much more and I think that directly affects our general happiness.
