He was completely over-determined, there were so many factors weighing on him such as his experience in jail, which his mother thought made him more violent, and the break up of his family, plus all of the other encounters that you mentioned. If it weren't for all of these influences, he might never have became the socially conscious man he did.
I don't think Fonda won an oscar for this performance, the woman who played his mother did and the director :)
