America does go to war to protect its own interests and sometimes it does end up being beneficial to other countries and sometimes it doesn't. American interference is a relatively new thing, only dating back to World War II, which we did not enter until the attack on Pearl Harbor. It would have been in our best interest to enter earlier, but the mentality of America at the time was isolationist. So I guess my point is that American's involvement in other countries changes with public opinion, just like everything else does.
