I know that this movie is about feudalism (predominantly), but the movie did not really explore how much (or how little, rather) choice the workers had. When Esteban took over the workers land, he said something like 'stay and work, or leave'- so is it to be concluded that sice the peasants stayed, they had no other choice, since they'd just be forced to work on one plantation or another?
Furthermore, what were they producing? And when the old native guy (Pedro's dad) left the land, Esteban did not attempt to stop him- so where was this guy going? To another plantation? To the city? This is important, b/c it shows that the peasants are not bound in debt to Esteban- they stay on his land for a reason- what is it?
