I also question the presence of a bondage contract in the film. Not only did Pedro's father leave, but eventually Pedro left (was thrown out) and seemed to make a living in politics. Esteban's illegitamate son also left Esteban's land to go into the military, although that may have occured after the ranch collasped. The "city" seemed to be an escape for those working Esteban's ranch. It seemed as though the natives worked the land in order to stay on it. But I also question the concept of a bondage contract and monopoly rents.
