The Mount Holyoke College Science Center Safety Handbook establishes policies and procedures to protect members of the Mount Holyoke College Community from laboratory hazards and to comply with regulatory Standards.
The Handbook references the requirements of a number of federal and state regulations including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Standard 29 CFR 1910.1450: Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health 105 CMR 120.000, Standards for Protection Against Radiation. While the OSHA Standard applies only to employees of the College, the same standards of protection are established for students and other members of the Community.
Given the diversity of laboratory operations, the Handbook does not include specific information about all the potential laboratory hazards that may be encountered. Faculty members are relied upon to use their best judgment in identifying and controlling additional hazards in the laboratory.
Questions regarding the Handbook should be addressed to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety.
