2015 John Lax Memorial Lecture

John Merriman, Charles Seymour Professor of History at Yale, is an eminent historian of modern France and Modern Europe, an engaging speaker, and master story teller.

The author of seven books and numerous edited collections of essays, two of Professor Merriman's courses are available online and on YouTube through Yale University: France since 1871 and Europe, 1648-1945. These lectures of Europe draw on his 2 volume history of Modern Europe since the Renaissance, a masterful survey that attests to his remarkable grasp of the European past. His talk for the Lax Lecture will take us back to the streets of Paris to witness the birth and death of the revolutionary Paris Commune in 1871, which is the subject of his latest, acclaimed book, Massacre: The Life and Death of the Paris Commune.
