Data Science: Understanding complex behavior in complex biological systems.

Márcio Duarte Albasini Mourão , Postdoctoral Researcher at the Mathematical Biosciences Institute, Ohio State University will discuss how data science applies to understanding the complex behavior of biological systems.

We analyze temporal and spatial molecular data in a crowded environment. The data is obtained via enhanced two dimensional lattice gas automata stochastic simulations of the Michaelis-Menten reaction mechanism in diffusion-limited conditions. Our analysis shows that the density and size of crowding molecules affect diffusion and first- and second- order reaction rates. We also find that molecular rotations and weak force interactions among molecules lead to a significant decay in fractal-like kinetics, a generalized mass action kinetics with time-dependent rates.
