MHC-IIP Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible to take part in the MHC IIP?
Sophomores and juniors can apply for MHC-IIP opportunities. We encourage first-year students to attend one of our information sessions to learn more about our program and the application process.
How do I apply for an MHC IIP opportunity?
Students apply for MHC-IIP opportunities through LyonNet and secure funding through the Universal Application for Funding. Students are also encouraged to meet with Kirk Lange, Director of International Experiential Learning, for a pre-application meeting. Please call the McCulloch Center at x2072 to schedule an appointment.
What is the deadline for 2016?
The deadline to apply on LyonNet is February 17, 2017. All application materials must be received by this date. Additionally, to be considered for funding a student must complete Step 1 of the UAF application in MyMountHolyoke by February 17, 2017.
How many IIP positions may I apply for?
You may apply for as many as three (3) IIP positions. Students with a strong rationale to apply for more than 3 should contact Kirk Lange.
What type of faculty reference is required?
MHC-IIP invites your recommender to either complete an online form or email a letter of reference (if preferred). Please direct your faculty recommender to the "Faculty References for MHC-IIP Applicants" page for details.
How long do the internships last?
MHC-IIP internships require a minimum 240 hour commitment. Typically, placements are eight weeks in length, while some last as long as twelve weeks.
Do I need a visa and immunizations?
It is the responsibility of the student to determine if she needs a visa and/or immunizations for the country in which she will be interning. Students who are U.S. citizens should check the U.S. State Department and the hosting country's website to determine visa requirements. Non-U.S. citizens should check their host country's website for visa requirements. Students should also consult the Center for Disease Control to get information about immunization requirements and recommendations for your host country.
What costs will funding cover?
Funding is awarded for MHC-IIP opportunities under the Lynk UAF, which provides $3000 for US internships and $3600 of international internships. Additional funding adjustments may be added depending on where your internship takes place. This funding is intended to support travel to your host country, as well as housing and living expenses. The student is given responsibility to manage this budget.
How are students selected for the MHC-IIP?
A committee of MHC faculty and McCulloch Center staff assesses candidates based on how the internship fits into the student’s academic program and the student’s ability to be successful in the position (e.g., academic preparation, adaptability, initiative, maturity). For many positions, the internship host will also be involved in the decision making process and finalist candidates may be required to interview (generally by video conference).

Attend one of the MHC-IIP information sessions scheduled this term. Students are encouraged to visit the McCulloch Center lounge in Dwight 104 to read evaluations of past MHC-IIP interns.
