Bubbles: The Day's Fascination
Eva Visscher-Simon '06
When given a new toy all children, regardless of any demographics, are fixated on the toys' unnatural status in their environment. For that toys' transition into their environment, the child covets the toy. These H'Mong boys living in the northern highlands of Vietnam coveted their new bottle of bubbles and even fought over who had bubble blowing rights. As Americans we came to Vietnam not to observe these boys with our gift of bubbles as outsiders but rather to look at our interactions with these boys as transitions into a natural status of understanding with each other.
