Tree of Life, Budapest
Elyse Newman '06
This monument is located in a courtyard behind a synagogue in Budapest. Every one of the 5,000 leaves has the name of a victim of the Holocaust on it. Looking at this graceful willow tree while standing in the middle of such a vibrant, bustling city, it was hard to imagine the atrocities that the tree represents. Such a contrast between the beautiful monument and the unspeakable horror which happened there over sixty years ago was jarring. This tree was a strong reminder to me that even though it may not always be evident, the whisper of history is always there and should never be forgotten.
